“Marvel’s The Avengers ” Demolishes All-Time Opening Weekend Record

The Avengers assembled this past weekend, and apparently so did audiences: Marvel’s The Avengers stunned the film industry, grossing a mind-blowing $207.4 million in ticket sales in just three days, a full $38 million more than the previous record-holder, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which grossed $169.2 million in its first weekend last summer.  The breakdown of this incredible accomplishment is as follows: $80.5 million on Friday (including $18.7 million from midnight screenings, good for second-biggest opening day ever), $69.7 million on Saturday (all-time record) and $57.2 million on Sunday, a full $7 million ahead of predictions, and also the all-time record.  Including overseas grosses, where the film opened a week earlier, The Avengers has amassed a total of $654.8 million worldwide, pushing it ahead of the $617.7 million earned by The Hunger Games, and making it the number-one film of 2012.  The film has received nearly universal praise from both critics and audiences, earning a 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the rare “A+” from Cinemascore.  At this point, The Avengers could very well become the highest-grossing comic book film of all time, a record currently held by 2008’s The Dark Knight, which grossed $533.3 million in the U.S. and just over $1 billion worldwide.
